I've never been uncomfortable on mass transit until today. When were we riding the train to experience this freak show? Two AM on a Friday night? Midnight on Saturday? Nope, Sunday afternoon. To his credit, he apologized to everybody as he got off the train. So, he spent the next three stops speaking out loud about how he wasn't going to take that "bull stuff" anymore. One fella boarded the train with the biggest fat lip I've ever seen. We thought the lady might hurl on us, so we stayed ready to jump out of the way. On our small rail car, which carried 30 passengers, three were completely passed out, one of whom rolled out of his seat onto the floor and just laid there, bottle in hand.Īnother couple, sitting directly across from us, were so high they could barely sit up unassisted and could not prop their eyes open. I have ridden subway and light rail systems in several large American cities, but have never experienced a freak show like this one in the Phoenix area. I really hope that someone addresses this problem soon. I hesitate to go downtown on the train because of my experiences. The sleeper riders seem to stay on the train. I only have used the one bus link, and it seems to be much better since there is a driver. No attempt to adhere to rules for riding the train. If security staff do come on board to check tickets, they may wake someone up to scan ticket and then just leave them in repose across the seats. I rode from downtown arts district to the end of the line in Mesa without seeing one security person. This was in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. The last time was the most scary when I saw the young men pushing and shoving and arguing and then the syringe come out of the backpack. I've seen men's underwear left on the seat, a substance looking like urine, running down the aisle. It is common to have people "sleeping" across two seats or occupying spaces with back packs, etc. The past couple of years, the trip experience has moved from awful to scary. I'm a snowbird and over the past few years we have used it to come from the airport to our winter home and often used it to go down town to events. It's a very affordable public transit system.
